Time Commitment case study
Sally and Sarah are 2 athletes who attend the Chichester Regional Academy. They both live on the Isle of Wight and have to travel to the mainland for the training sessions. The itinerary below demonstrates the commitment these two athletes are prepared to put in, in their quest to become top quality netball players.

As this was the first training session both Sarah and Sally’s mothers wanted to come along to “check things out” and because of the time of the crossing it meant that Sarah and Sally had to ask their schools to give them permission to leave half an hour early.
Having left school at 3.30, they eventually arrived home at 11.30. Eight hours for a two hour training session. That’s commitment!!
The girls attend different schools and meet up, out of school, either for their Club netball or to work on their Academy fitness programmes. Sally and Sarah have been meeting weekly for their endurance sprint sessions, which are now being incorporated into their club training. They are also attending a spinning class 30 minutes drive from each of their homes. As Sarah is doing PE GCSE over the next 2 years, her PE teachers have gladly agreed to incorporate some of the requirements of the programme into her work, which is a great help. Shorwell, Sarah and Sally’s Netball Club, is also being very helpful by incorporating some of the requirements of the programme in its training night.
For the next session, the girls are planning to catch the catamaran to Portsmouth and then the train to Chichester. This will mean a slightly later departure and earlier return home, but it will still be over 6 hours from when they leave home to them getting back.

Both athletes were recently invited to the Tri Regional Match Play day at Bath University. The trip meant catching the car ferry at 7:30am to Portsmouth, returning on the 7:30pm ferry to Fishbourne, and they finally got home at 8:30pm, exhausted but really pleased with the way the day went.
The Regional Academy athletes have a strict weekly training programme, where they are expected to do at least 15 hours high quality work including speed and agility, high intensity sprinting, strength and conditioning, landing skills and wall work. To be able to do this training requires a huge amount of organisation and commitment, but this is what is required, if the athletes have any ambitions of reaching the top.
