It's that time again - the rules of netball - your chance to influence them

Is there a netball rule which drives you nuts or which you wish could be changed? This could be your chance to affect the way our great game is played, all around the world!
The last Official Netball Rules review was held in 2007, and instead of waiting for the normal eight years IFNA agreed that the next rules review will be in 2011, at an International Netball Federation Congress. In order to change the rules, all member countries must submit any proposed changes by 30th September 2010, which will then all be voted on by the member countries.
From the proposals submitted, the IFNA Rules Advisory Panel will determine if there are any rules, identified in the review, which would benefit from a trial period, and will then determine all the processes of how that trial can be conducted. Once the trial has been completed successfully, the IFNA Rules Advisory Panel will then draw up draft recommendations for consideration by congress.
So if you have a ruling which you feel should be changed to benefit the game, then England Netball would like to hear from you. Any suggestions must be received at Head Office by 16th August 2010 so that they can be considered by the England Netball Rules Board before our submission to the IFNA Committee. Please look at the rules and suggest any changes - however, please remember that you need to provide a reason for your suggestion, alongside the wording for your new proposal.
Please download and complete the review form below with your new rules suggestions, and return it to EN Head Office as soon as possible. Please mark it with ‘Rules Review’ as the title. The forms can either be e-mailed to sheelaghr@englandnetball.co.uk, or faxed to 01462 442343 or posted FAO Sheelagh Redpath at Head Office.

Sunglasses and Acrlyic nails
Question: Please can you advise what action can be taken against players with acrylic nails. We are getting more and more incidents of players turning up to play who have acrylic nails.
Answer: Rule 1.4.5 clearly states that Fingernails, shall be short and smooth. If their fingernails conform to this rule then they can participate, whether their nails are square or round.
Please beware that should a player be wearing Acrylic nails which do not conform to the above, then they should not participate according to the rule. If the players Acrylic nails do conform to the rule, and they subsequently suffer damage to their nail(s) then, they participate at their own risk and they would not covered by any England Netball Insurance.
Another directive which has been agreed by the EN Rules board in relation to the wearing of Sunglasses whilst participating in England Netball activities
Sunglasses should not normally be worn when participating in Netball activities. However, sunglasses may be worn for genuine medical reasons when participating in recognised and authorised EN netball activities. If sunglasses are required for genuine medical reasons, then an appropriate medical certificate must be supplied to England Netball (or the appropriate league, county or region)
If a player / coach / official has to wear glasses for medical reasons then she / he is fully insured from an EN point of view. But , if the glasses become damaged due to a netball accident then these are not insured.
This guidance applies to Netball Activities within England Netball only.
