Chiltern Netball Club – From Strength to Strength

Prior to my role there has not been any substantial netball provision in the Chiltern District, there have been sessions that have been put on but they have never continued for longer than 6 months.

Therefore when I set up two new netball sessions in Little Chalfont and Chesham my main aim was for them to become self-sustainable. These sessions have been running now from May 2011 and the women (around 20 at each session) have been playing for seven months. The ladies have made new friends, had fun and increased in standard dramatically during this time and have expressed an interest to enter a league next summer.

In order to offer this to the participants of these sessions as well as still offer a ‘Back to Netball’ Aspect for new players, we decided to merge these two sessions to come together and train on one day (B2N 7-8, Squad 8-9.30) from next Feb. In order to support the development of these new sessions it was apparent that there was a need for a new club and club structure to be developed.

Firstly, we appointed a new committee of proactive, motivated players who will drive the development of this new club. We appointed a Chairman (myself), a Treasurer (Claire Mellish) and a Secretary (Rebecca Foss) as well as a Social Secretary and an individual to handle PR and Communications. These people will be key to keeping the club intact and will provide the essential resources which will enable the club to grow in the future.

In addition to this, it was clear that the club needed to develop its own coaches and referees. We were glad to be able to appoint Jodie Noble as our club coach in November 2011 when she passed her Level 1 qualification, she will be going on to do her level 2 qualification in the new year. As well as this, we have highlighted further individuals who will go on to train and coaches/referees in 2012.

It has been a pleasure to be involved in this project and it has been great to see the development of both the players and the club itself. I will be stepping away from this project in a work capacity in a few months, but will continue to be involved as a player and proactive chairman.
