Sussex Club were delighted to win Division 1 of the South Region League a the end of the 2007/08 season although, as in past years, the final placings went right to the last couple of fixtures with Clan and Trinity close behind.
Sussex Club had therefore won a place in the play-offs for entry to the EN Premier League and travelled to Loughborough on 10 May with much trepidation. The weather was very hot that weekend and the indoor venue was stifling. First game on the Saturday against Chester was very close but Sussex Club came out eventual winners by 2 goals. Two hours later they played Aquilatel who were a Premier League team playing to retain their place in Division 2.
Sheila Martin said that ` Sussex Club started off nervously but played consistently well to win by 8 goals. Saturday night was spent dissecting the games and planning for the match against Comets the next day. Sussex Club took the court with determination and won the game easily by 30 goals. Considering that we are a relatively new club and travelled to Loughborough with only 9 squad members, a scorer and five supporters - everyone was delighted with the result and we are looking forward to playing next season in Premier League Division 2.'
The Club team will be known as Sussex Thunder for the new season.

Julia Nolan, Shock Absorber spokesperson said: "We are delighted to be supporting the England international netball squads. 9.5 million women who participate in exercise in the UK are not wearing a sports bra. These women are at great risk of damaging the ligaments in their breast tissue, which can lead to permanent sagging later in life. By wearing our sports bras you will be significantly reducing bounce, which means maximum comfort throughout your game".
The team at Shock Absorber are so passionate about educating women of the need to wear the correct bra when exercising, that they commissioned research by the Shock Absorber Sports Institute (SASI) at Portsmouth University. It revealed that during high intensity exercise a woman's breasts moved by up to 14cm, and that by wearing a Shock Absorber sports bra this movement was reduced by up to 74%.
Terms & Conditions: Offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotion, discount or offer. Offer is subject to availability, whilst stocks last. Offer only applies to orders properly placed online at www.boobydoo.co.uk/shockabsorb
Netballers in Netball South were saddened to hear that Betty Allen passed away peacefully on 23rd April 2008.
Betty was a great inspiration to both Berkshire and South Region umpires. A wonderful lady who used her quiet, unassuming and gentle manner to encourage umpires of all abilities to improve, and mostly importantly, enjoy their umpiring.
Betty was a player and umpire, reaching Panel (A) Award level and was an umpire tutor and tester for many years. She used her skills to mentor and motivate umpires and under her guidance the numbers of qualified umpires in Berkshire and South Region rose considerably. During her period as Umpiring Secretary, three international umpires emerged from the Region and represented England over many years. Betty gave umpires belief in themselves and many of the umpires she worked with continue to follow her example and do the same in the region now.
Betty was the South Region Umpiring Secretary from 1977 to 1991. It was a measure of her abilities that she had developed the role such that it took 4 people to take over her workload when she retired! She also held the role of Secretary to the AENA Umpiring Committee for many years and received the AENA Long Service Award for her contribution to netball. Betty was a modest, highly respected lady.
Many of us would not be where we are now without her - an admirable legacy.
Katy Ritchie commenced on 14 April, as the new full time Netball Development Officer for Sussex and Netball South would like to welcome her to the team.
Katy graduated from the University of Brighton in 2006 with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science and over the last two years has worked as Vice President Eastbourne for the University of Brighton Students’ Union. Within this role, she has worked closely with Sport Brighton to develop student sport at the university meaning she brings with her some excellent skills that can now be used to develop netball across Sussex. Katy can be contacted through the Sussex County Sports Partnership or her e-mail address k.ritchie@brighton.ac.uk
