  •  Team South v TeamBath at University of Bath

Team South went into their final game on 29 February with a strong determination to excel themselves and they certainly did.

The match started very strongly with both teams contesting every ball and scoring only on oppositions centre passes. As the two teams settled into the game it was neck and neck to the whistle at the end of the first quarter with Team south just running out of time to score the equalising goal. Team Bath  led by just one goal [8-9].

With a couple of changes for the 2nd quarter Team South gained in confidence and Kristy Butcher at WA took some exceptional passes and sent some well placed feeds into the  circle. Continuing to get tips and interceptions Team South took advantage of their turnovers to score goals and ended the first half one goal up [19-18]

Going onto the 3rd quarter Team South continued to defend and Ellen Franks' quick reactions to her team mates' tips again proved advantageous to Team South. With Kat Hayes again shooting with 100% accuracy Team South increased their lead at the end of the 3rd quarter by 3 goals [28-25].

Team South had to dig deep for the final quarter if they wanted to hold onto their lead. But the efforts of the first 3 proved to be too much. Tiredness crept in and errors of judgement were made. Team Bath with fresh legs finally got the better of Team South to win by 5 goals [39-34].

An excellent effort by Team South; their achievements this season are to be congratulated.

  •  The North - South divide....

Saturday 9th February saw Team South travel up to Newcastle to play Team Northumbria.  This was always going to be a close game with both teams beside each other in the league table. Both teams demonstrated a good level of discipline and were matched in possession of the ball. This showed with the quarter time results:

Quarter Scores            Q1                Q2              Q3              Q4

Team Northumbria            8                    5                9                 6

Team South                      8                   10              5                 11

Team South incurred injuries to Emma James and Katherine Hayes who was forced to come off. However, this did not dampen team spirit, and good communication in defence by Caitlin Williams throughout motivated all players to succeed and helped to force errors by Team Northumbria and with the turnovers that were made enabled the ball to be brought up the court to the shooters. This much needed win will take Team South in good stead for a crucial away trip to Leeds in two weeks.

  •  Thunder hits Team South!

Team South played away to Northern Thunder on the 26th January at Greenbank Sporting Academy, Liverpool.

This was a strong competitive game closely fought all the way by both teams. The match started off very strongly with both teams contesting every ball and scoring consistenly well - the first quarter ended in a draw 12-12.

During the second quarter the effort to contest in the first quarter took it's toll on Team South and a few unforced errors led to Northern Thunder taking a slender lead. With Team South failing to drive through the middle, it enabled Thunder to make the necessary interceptions and to go ahead at half time. Team South went out with renewed vigour but were unable to close the gap.

Despite some good drives and forward thinking passes by WA Emma James, Northern Thunder stretched their lead to end the 3rd quarter up by 5 goals with a score-line of 25-29.

Determined to get back into the game Team South made more changes and continued to contest every ball. However, even with the numerous interceptions throughout the game by GD Shelley Gosney and GK Rebecca Randall, Northern Thunder managed to keep their lead and increase it by 2 more goals.  The final score from a very strongly fought match was a win for Northern Thunder by 7 goals ending at 33-40.

  •   Lightning strikes at Southampton

Last Saturday (24th November) Team South held their first home NTL fixture at the University of Southampton. Loughorough Lightning started the first quarter very strong and Team South struggled to keep up, however during the second quarter Team South came out stong and the scoreline began to get close. Throughout the rest of the match changes were made on both sides as the players tried to unsettle each other. The final quarter saw Loughbrough Lighning take the lead, Team South kept fighting and closed down the gap but unfortunately it was too late. Loughborough beat the South 34 - 28. A big thank you to Southampton University who's staff and facilities were fantastic.

  •    Team South fight for victory over the Dragons.

Last Friday (9th November) saw Team South play their first NTL fixture away in Wales against Celtic Dragons. The squad, who have only had a couple of training sessions together, performed a very thorough warm up before heading to the court. It took the first 3 minutes for either side to score whilst the players tried to settle their nerves but Celtic Dragons started to lead Team South during the first quarter.

The match was very competitive with both sides showing some excellent ball work. Team South kept fighting and their effort was rewarded by a victory. The final score was 40 - 36 to Team South!

Team South face their next fixture at Southampton University where they will be hosting Loughborough Lightening on Saturday 24th November. Good luck Team South!
